There have recently been a number of scammers who pretend to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
HMRC have advised that there is a new phishing scam you should be aware of. If you receive an email with the subject “Your 2016 Tax Report” with an attachment, DO NOT OPEN IT.
The format of these e-mails can look extremely convincing as they make use of HMRC branding. Some emails have even been signed off with the name of an actual HMRC employee in order to make them seem even more realistic. The contents will generally be offering you a tax refund and asking for bank details in order for the money to be refunded.
HMRC will never send notification of a tax reimbursement or ask for personal or payment information by email.
If you receive the email, HMRC ask you to forward it on to the following email address: phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk
